Despite the fact, the over many of adults have gained access to health care insurance
related to the Affordable Care Act there are still many Americans that continue to lack coverage. Data from Health people 20/20 demonstrates that there are still disparities in access to care by sex, age race, ethnicity, education and family income (Healthy people 2020). The disparities range from all levels of care including access to ongoing primary care. At the local and state level policymakers are aimed at eliminating health dipartites by creating more opportunities for health care professionals and increasing the number of health professional practicing in medically underserved populations. The Cal. Health & Saf. Code 150 et. seq.- establishes the Office of Multicultural Health within the State Department of Public Health. The office works towards closing health status gaps among racial and ethnic minorities. Responsibilities of the office include developing a strategic minority health plan, providing cultural and linguistic
competency training to health professionals, and providing assistance to help other public and private entities locate funding sources for multicultural health initiatives (Comlossy, Hansen, & Garcia, 2020).
Many people live in rural areas that lack access to primary care services. The Cal. Health & Safety Code 127875 et. seq.- creates the Health Professions Career Opportunity Program, which is designed to increase the number of ethnic minorities in health professional training and increase the number of minority health professionals practicing in medically underserved areas (Comlossy, Hansen, & Garcia, 2020). For this reason, the Advanced Practice Nurse will be a crucial component to the future health care and help improve health care access to the underserved population. The advanced Nurse Practitioner will improve increase access using evidence based preventive services.
