social stratification

GUIDELINES FOR THE FINAL REQUIREMENT 1: INDIVIDUAL OUTPUT

1. Consider the project as your contribution to documenting your family history. Your task is to
submit an output describing, analyzing, and reflecting upon your familys position in the social
stratification system in your home country. The output can be either an essay (with or without
photos) or a video. The output is worth 25 points.
2. As much as possible, your output should be able to address the major questions listed below. The
output does not need to be structured in a Question-and-Answer manner. In other words, the
output can be presented in a manner that integrates your answers to the guide questions.
3. It is best if you gather and use data and information in support of your answers and claims. Data
can include or be based on your own observations, interviews with family members, photos, records,
and other documents.
4. Guide questions:
a. How would you classify or categorize your familys status or position, based on existing
structures and beliefs in your home country?
– Requires you to very briefly mention the nature of the social stratification system in your
country, e.g., major bases and dimensions, before or while stating your familys position.
b. What are your bases and evidence for your claim that your family is on that level, status or
position in the social hierarchy
– Requires you to provide some data and indicators in support of your claim. These can include
visible and less visible indicators, and direct or indirect measures showing the level at which
your family is in.
c. Has your familys position been the same over the years and across generations, or has it
changed? How did this continuity or change happen? What factors may have helped your family
maintain or change its status or position over the years?
d. What privileges, opportunities, difficulties, and challenges does your family currently
experience being in its current level or stratum? How is the Covid-19 pandemic affecting your
familys status or position, if at all?
e. Is your familys status or position likely to change in the next decade or so? Why do you think
so? What factors will facilitate or hinder this change or non-change?
