You will write a short (5 pages, double spaced) essay in which you will advance a clear argument (thesis) about  The Things They Carried-OBrien. You will use one of the essay prompts listed below as a springboard in developing your thesis. Your thesis must be supported with textual evidence (quotations) and some close analysis (close reading). MLA formatting is required.

Essay Topics that you can use are:

1)    Analyze the representation and role(s) of setting in  OBrien, The Things They Carried. How is the setting described? How does the setting add meaning to the work? Present a clear argument in which you explain the effect(s) and the significance of the setting.

2)    Develop and support an argument about the use of narration / narrating point of view in ( OBrien, The Things They Carried). Describe the manner of narration. Whose perspective is given and how? What is the effect?
