Throughout the quarter youll be reading, thinking and talking about the role of journalism in a democratic system. For the final exam, you will be asked to apply your thoughts, reflections and weekly news consumption (news protocols) to the current situation. The question, you will have to address in a five-page essay is:

How is the news media covering the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications?

Put differently, what patterns can you identify and how do these shape the coverage? Argue your point of view by using concepts we discussed in class as well as examples drawn from your news protocols.

The final exam is worth 100 points.

GRADING CRITERIA

CONCEPTUAL THINKING: 25 points

Does the paper refer to particular concepts (commercialism, conservativism, satire, technology, etc.) from our course readings/viewings/discussions and apply them effectively?

EVIDENCE: 25 points

Whats the journalistic and academic evidence? Does the paper provide illuminating examples from the news protocols?

ARGUMENTATION/STRUCTURE: 25 points

Are arguments logically connected? Hows the flow of the paper? Is the introduction captivating? Is the ending conclusive?

CLARITY, WRITING STYLE AND GRAMMAR: 25 points

Hows the writing? Is it clear and effective?
