Technical Writing

You need to have one nonfiction, technical writing piece in your portfolio.
Technical writing is writing that communicates specific information to a defined audience for a purpose. It needs to be able to be understood and potentially applied by the reader. Clarity and specificity (remember out peanut butter and jelly activity?) are critical as well as defining terminology that your reader may not understand.

Examples of technical or nonfiction writing that may be good for this class include:
A brief manual on how to use a specific item or piece of equipment
Instructions on how to do a specific task
An explanation about how something works
A brief report of a products history, evolution, or revisions
A piece exploring a specific problem and presenting a solution (sometimes called white papers)
A case study or written analysis of a real life situation
An article review on an article from a magazine, academic journal, or other text
A proposal specifically requesting something (like funding) or calling a person or group of people to action

Remember, if ANY research is involved, it should be CITED clearly in MLA or APA format! NO PLAGIARISM!
As this is technical writing, you may use numbers, bullets, charts, photographs, or even diagrams to help get your point across in this piece.
First, read examples of technical writing. You can read the links Ive provided below OR search for your own exemplars of the types of writing written above and read your own exemplars.
Next, work on the writing of this piece.
Please note that some of these samples are quite lengthy. Try to choose a topic or idea that can be done in about 2-3 pages, double spaced, for your portfolio.
