Assignment #1: Identify a language you have chosen to investigate. Explain as much as you can about the relations (historical and genetic in the special sense in which linguists use this word) of this language to others and to larger families of languages. Where is it spoken? What sources have you identified for it, both in terms of the language itself and for the culture(s) in which it is spoken? What is the social and political status of this language? What aspects of the culture within which it is spoken (population, influence of other cultures, etc.) contribute to its status as either robust or endangered?
