MODEL FOR WRITING CONTEXTUAL PROJECT
1. Introduction
As an introduction to this very important academic exercise, it is important for
students coming to undertake this activity for the first time to become acquainted with
what it is all about and how to carry out this academic work and for what reasons is it important for the graduate student.
Contextual project is a form of academic study undertaken by student with minimal
supervision to provide them with the opportunity to carry out independent academic
work. It is a research work focusing on a specific subject matter or course and
applying salient concepts in that field to real life situation to demonstrate innovative
ways by which such concepts and principles play out in real life situation. The writer
would be contextualizing subject principles to practical situation addressing issues
arising and proposing solutions. For instance, every subject field in public health has
its context to be explored. In accomplishing this project, the writer becomes better
acquainted with application of theory in real life situation. This project would earn the
writer a maximum score of 100% when graded.
2. How to accomplish a contextual project: Initiation
Developing the contextual project requires that the graduate student identify a subject
field for research and set up an outline of prominent concepts taught to be used.
Review these concepts and note how they will effectively provide evidence of a real
life occurrence. Your contextual project should fall within public Health domain
develop your thoughts based on the outline below. You must endeavour to have a
focus for which the project would accomplish. Follow the outline below to structure
your paper.
3. Outline for the contextual Project
i. There should be a title for the project; For example, Contextual project
demonstrating the application of Family and Population Health concepts in
implementing reproductive rights for communities in low and middle income
Countries.
ii. Include a brief introduction to present problems emerging from the subject of
the project; using the present title, emerging fertility challenges and aspects
population control, and the use of contraceptives with various problems
emerging as a result of unplanned pregnancies among at risk populations. The
brief introduction should end with a paragraph stating the purpose of the
contextual project. It may begin with a sentence such as The purpose of this
project is to identify ten concepts in family and population health and discuss
how these concepts would provide contextual evidence for strengthening
reproductive rights of women of child-bearing age in low-middle-income
countries presently having challenges with reproductive health care
Identification of Ten Concepts; this should provide the opportunity to list the
ten related Concepts/Theories in the subject field adequately and give brief
statement indicating how these concepts are considered relevant in the field. In
scoring, this section would earn you 20 marks when adequately done; 2 marks
for each concept identified.
iv. Critical analysis of these concepts. What is the function of a critical analysis
of identified concept/theory? This is an analytical procedure appraising how
the concepts provides theoretical understanding of the phenomena involved in
the subject and how significant the concept is in explaining the challenges
creating the health problems. The presentation should demonstrate how well
grounded the writer is in demonstrating the connections between the concepts
and the emerging problems confronting the at risk populations. Note also that
this section would earn you 20 marks when adequately done; 2 marks for
each concept critically analysed. However, you may not have to conduct the
critical analysis individually, but may perform an integrated conceptual
appraisal of all ten identified concept/theories since they are usually related
within a subject matter. Ensure that they are distinguishable as a composite of
the context
v. Identify current research activities related to the concept and theories.
What is the purpose of this section of the project? In developing the narratives
for this section, three main issues are pertinent; the emerging problems around
the subject, the approaches applied by the publication to address the problems
in the context of the concept and how all research agree or differ in their
conclusions. This section would enable you conduct an evaluation of the
publications in which the identified concepts/theories have been used in
research to provide evidence of proof of concept and how the paper
contributes to overall knowledge. To do this successfully, consider three major
contributions of each publication to be included in appraising the value of the
paper. What the paper identifies as problem warranting undertaking the study this must be in the context of the subject of the project. What are the findings
and conclusions arrived at by the authors. Finally, your appraisal of how
contextually relevant are these appraisals to the subject of your contextual
project. Remember that citations of sources are an essential part of this
section. In scoring, this section would earn you 20 marks when adequately
done; 2 marks for each concept identified and well integrated.
vi. The application of the concept to the real world. The application of the
identified concepts/theories to real world situation may require providing
situational analysis of how these concepts enhance workplace environment of
the professionals who practice in the field. You may use your experience as a
practicing public health professional to illustrate how these concepts have
been applied to make practice and service delivery successful. In scoring, this
section would earn you 20 marks when adequately done; 2 marks for each
concept identified and adequately operationalized.
vii. Usefulness of the concepts identified to current world. This section differs
slightly from the previous section. Here the student writing the contextual
project may consider how best communities elsewhere having challenges in
the identified field/subject issues may find lasting solution. It may appear as
recommendations to improve practice or service delivery. In scoring, this
section would earn you 20 marks when adequately done.
The final part of the contextual project should have a conclusion and listed citations used throughout the project in the American Psychological Association (APA) style. 5. The student must conduct plagiarism check for similarity index and provide proof of report as an appendix at the end. 6. Note of Warning. On no account should a student conducting contextual project in the form of an empirical study. This would deviate grossly from the form and purposes intended for this project. However, if an empirical study is conducted for this project and to be used for this project, then the study MUST be adapted to meet the requirement of the contextual project and not in the original heading guiding empirical studies.
