Journal 5: Reading Response to One of Assigned Stories
Respond to one of the assigned stories from your class textbook – assigned as part of your reading homework – see class schedule.  The choice of which assigned story to respond to is yours.
By “respond,” I am asking you to close read the story and try to make meaning of it.  OBSERVE SOMETHING (using 6 analytical moves + elements of short fiction, etc), then SHOW an example (quote and explain) and then WHY/HOW IS THIS IMPORTANT?  WHAT DOES IT ADD TO MEANING FOR THE TEXT?  This is what you have been doing in past journal responses.
Notice what each of the journal attempts to get you to do – to dig into one of the stories assigned so that you can begin to develop non-obvious writing ideas.  This is critical practice.  You do not need to have fully-formed ideas – you need to have thoughtful attempts to engage and understand a story/stories, and you need specifics from the text you respond to.

You need to be specific/detailed AND use/cite examples from the story.  MLA format/citations/Works Cited required, as is attention to polish.

Your response should run around 300 words
