Some Guidance for Unit 7 Assignment (Methodology)
Posted on: Friday, May 29, 2020 5:31:05 PM CDT

Hi, Everyone:

Please remember that the Unit 7 Assignment is the whole Chapter 3, not a cut and paste of what you wrote for the Unit 6 discussion.

Please look in the template for the subheadings of what needs to be in your Chapter 3.  You will need to do it all (and more) to get the best grade on this assignment.

First, what you don’t need:  The directions say to include your rewritten Chapter 2.  Yes, you should have rewritten your Chapter 2 by now, but you do not need to include it.

I’m only grading Chapter 3 (Methodology) in this Assignment.  If the Scoring Guide asks for something you put in Chapter 2, and you decide not to put it in Chapter 3, you will lose all the points for that criterion.  Again, I’m not grading Chapter 2 this time and you don’t need to include it now.

Let’s talk about the Scoring Guide.  Be sure to align your work with the Distinguished levels for each criterion.  Not including anything on a criterion is the fastest way to get a bad grade on an Assignment.  Each criterion is worth 12% so if you leave two of them unanswered, that’s 24 points right off the top of your grade.

Let’s look at a couple of criteria for the Distinguished level.  Take #2 criterion; In the Distinguished area it says “Describes the purpose of a research study; connects purpose to the research question and choice of methodology with support from the literature.”

It looks simple enough but what do you have to do?  Describe the purpose of your study — what does purpose mean again?  You’ll have to articulate the connection between the purpose and the research question.  What is the point of the research question?  Why is it important?  Finally, you have to connect purpose to your methodology choice and provide support from the literature; i.e., citations and references about these points.

What I’ve noticed in the past on this one is people sometimes don’t even have a section for the purpose and don’t draw those necessary connections.

Another criterion is 5 (you’ll have to count down).  It says “Analyzes the potential contribution of a proposed research study. Draws on current evidence to support argument describing the purpose, which is to answer the research question and solve the research problem. Discusses how anticipated research findings contribute to existing literature and the potential remaining gaps in the literature. Considers pertinent stakeholders.”

In this one you would analyze the study’s potential contribution.  Analyze is different than describe or explain.  Please note what it says about purpose — which is to answer the RQ and solve the research problem.  In order to do that you have to have both the RQ clearly labeled and spelled out as well as the same for the research problem. (What is the research problem again?)

Remember, the RQ is the most important piece of a research proposal.  Everything has to connect to it.  Written correctly, it will signal what the methodology is to be, as well as the type of design.  It has an important relationship to the purpose and the research problem and the research questions have to align with the RQ.  If you received feedback that your RQ needs some editing or won’t work with the methodology you chose, you much change it.  If you have an unworkable RQ, nothing else will work either.

Procedures:  Step by step procedures need to be in this chapter for how you will recruit your participants, how you collect your data, and how you will analyze your data.  We know that you can’t say much about how to analyze data, but you can read something about this in regard to your design so you say a sentence or two.

Extras:  Pay attention for extras that need to be included such as ethics and diversity.  Yes you wrote about these in Chapter 2, but now it’s from the perspective of the methodology.  For example, what would be most important about ethics and your procedures (at least three main things)?

For further assistance in completing Chapter 3, read the directions in the Unit, read what the template says for Chapter 3; Methodology, and look at a dissertation to see how they wrote this chapter.

If you’ve already turned in your assignment but see you’d like to change something let me know and I’ll send it back to you.
