Despite impressive growth rates in agriculture over the last few decades, the question that looms large is how sustainable is this growth? This is because high agricultural growth has been achieved at a high environmental cost. Land and water quality degradation are cases in point. Agricultural intensification, amongst other things, has exposed the fragility of the physical environment. Furthermore climate change is likely to have a significant adverse effect in regions of greatest vulnerability e.g. South Asia.
